What is Interventional Pain Management?

Interventional Pain Management specialists are physicians who are board certified in usually Anesthesia or Physiatry and who have completed extra training after residency in a Pain Management fellowship.  Interventional Pain specialists are trained to use minimally invasive procedures to treat pain at its source.  Although they do prescribe and manage pain medications, these medications are used only as needed and preferably as an adjunct to a procedure.

An Interventional Pain Management specialist is quite different from a “pill mill” type of pain management practice.  Pill mills are usually staffed by physicians who have no special training in pain management and “treat” patients only by prescribing narcotics. Unfortunately these questionable practices do a great disservice to patients who have legitimate pain and need quality treatment.
